What Texas is getting in 4-Star Edge Smith Orogbo

The verbal commitment from four-star edge rusher Smith Orogbo should excite many Longhorn fans.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound edge rusher from Houston, Texas is a dominant player in the trenches. Orogbo uses fast acceleration and active feet to blow by offensive linemen attempting to block him. This speed allows him to get around the edge and keep his pursuit of the ball carrier. He is also a very lanky player, able to use his long reach to evade offensive linemen and swallow any space the runner thought they had.
Orogbo understands leverage and knows what move needs to be deployed for him to successfully reach the backfield. This high football IQ allows him to win in the trenches more often than not. Orogbo has a large arsenal of moves to reach the backfield that include a powerful bull rush, elusive speed rush, and a swim move. Play recognition is another key factor to Orogbo’s game. He has a great eye for play action. His knowledge of the game is accompanied by lots of physicality and aggression. He has a great bull rush move and will relocate linemen when shooting off of the line.
Orogbo has some room to bulk up, but that does not stop him from laying some powerful hits onto opponents. He is very strong for his stature and you can hear the pop when he makes contact with a ball carrier. His ability to successfully execute wrap up tackles has roots in his strength. Once you are in Orogbo’s hands, he drags you to the turf.
Orogbo will be a very interesting project for Sarkisian’s coaching staff, but if all goes as planned, his upside will be immense.
