No. 9 Texas Loses 29-21 to Florida in SEC Opener

GAINESVILLE — The No. 9 Texas Longhorns fell victim to the Florida Gators on Saturday afternoon in an underwhelming showcase on every level, especially on the defensive side of things.

Florida received the ball to mark the start of the contest, and the Gators made the best of the opportunity as they drove 84 yards in 13 plays to take an early 7-0 lead.

After the Longhorns were unable to move the ball, they punted back to the Gators, who easily drove down the field again and kicked a field goal to take a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

Texas punted yet again, but this time the Longhorns’ defense stood up and forced a fumble that Texas linebacker Anthony Hill managed to recover.

After starting on Florida’s 45-yard line, and with the help of a 33-yard pass from quarterback Arch Manning to Parker Livingstone, the Texas offense finally found rhythm and scored in just four plays to cut the deficit to three.

However, Florida quarterback DJ Lagway and the offense responded with multiple 10+ yard passes, which assisted in scoring another touchdown to regain control of the game.

It didn’t get any better for the Longhorns’ offense, though, as a three-and-out ended in a blocked punt that Texas recovered in its own end zone, which resulted in a safety.

Florida was unable to score points after receiving the ball, so it took a 19-7 lead into halftime.

The third quarter got off to a slow start, but about halfway through the quarter, a 60-yard pass to Florida wide receiver Vernell Brown put the Gators in position to extend their lead by three with a field goal.

Manning and the offense finally seemed to get things going as Manning scrambled for 15 yards before throwing an 18-yard pass that put Manning in the position to find wide receiver Ryan Wingo for a 38-yard touchdown pass.

It didn’t take much for the Gators to extend their lead yet again as Lagway found freshman wide receiver Dallas Wilson for a 55-yard touchdown to give Florida a 29-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Both teams slowed down offensively in the fourth, though, as Manning threw an interception five plays into the drive. Florida was unable to make anything of it, but on the next Texas drive, Manning threw another pick.

That was followed by Lagway throwing an interception of his own, but Texas went three-and-out as it was unable to do any good with the turnover. But it was able to find success on its next drive.

Down by 15 with almost five minutes left, Manning got hot, throwing a 26-yard pass to wide receiver Daylon McCutcheon before finding wide receiver DeAndre Moore for a 42-yard gain. That set the Longhorns up on the Florida 1-yard line and allowed running back Tre Wisner to find his way into the end zone for his first time since returning from his Week 1 injury.

Although Texas was able to force the Gators off the field in just four plays, receiving the ball with just 46 seconds was not enough time for the Longhorns to find offensive momentum, as Manning threw an incomplete pass as time expired.

No. 9 Texas fell to 3-2 as the Florida Gators improved to 2-3. Fans can stay tuned for tomorrow to see how bad the drop in the AP rankings will be. Next up: The Red River Rivalry that will no longer be a top 10 matchup.
