Quick Thoughts After Texas’ Second Loss of the Season

GAINESVILLE — The Longhorns entered the season ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation, and now they have just suffered their second loss of the season to an unranked 1-3 Florida team.
The game was full of miscues and errors on both sides of the ball, and now, Texas’ playoff hopes are in jeopardy.
Here are some quick thoughts following the loss to the Gators in Gainesville:
– The offensive line may be the most concerning part of the offense right now. Although quarterback Arch Manning may be having issues of his own, the offensive line’s inability to give Manning adequate time in the pocket or even provide decent run blocks for most of the game was a major issue and something that the coaching staff will need to ensure that they correct.
– This was the worst game we’ve seen from the defense so far this season, and it was surprising to see. This is a defense that held now No. 1-ranked Ohio State to just 14 points and has looked like it may be the best defense in the nation. After consistently playing at a championship-caliber level, it now seemed just like any other decent defense in college football.
– Arch is still having issues, that’s for certain. However, if anything, this game still provided some light. This was not his worst game so far this season, as he did throw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing just over 50% at 16-29. His flashes were visible again, which is great, because those flashes showed a great QB. However, he still threw two interceptions while making bad decisions. There’s plenty of work that still needs to be done, and it has to happen quickly.
– As the season goes on, it becomes increasingly more apparent that one of the best and most logical decisions that head coach Steve Sarkisian could make would be to hire a new offensive coordinator and/or give the OC play-calling duties. There have been too many issues and questions surrounding the decisions made by Sarkisian as the offense play-caller. For example, the most apparent question from this game relates to why there were only 11 of 26 total rush attempts from players other than Manning.
