Sarkisian Tells How Tre Wisner Impacted the Red River Rivalry

AUSTIN — In Texas’ 23-6 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma on Saturday, the Longhorns were able to run the ball efficiently and manage a productive ground game for the first time this season.
Due to failed run blocking and injuries to running backs Tre Wisner and CJ Baxter, the Texas rush attack has been lacking for the most part in every game this season, especially the week prior in the loss to Florida.
When the Longhorns arrived in Dallas, though, things got going rather quickly. Wisner was able to make a huge impact as he rushed for 94 yards, which was huge, considering there were only 11 rushing yards by running backs against the Gators.
The offensive line played a huge role in Texas’ ability to run the ball, but Wisner’s physicality and speed dominated the Sooners’ attempt at stopping the run. Quarterback Arch Manning also played a role, though, as he recorded 34 yards on the ground.
After defeating Oklahoma, head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke about Wisner’s impact on the game.
“I thought Tre brought a real sense of physicality to his run game today,” Sarkisian said. “You know, even early on, I know we had a couple of penalties, but he was running with real intent. But again, I think it started in the week in practice. I think his rhythm and practice, and timing, run timing with the offensive line, got better as the week went on. We stuck to those runs. We didn’t have a big run menu of schemes, and we stuck to the schemes that we felt like we practiced that we’re going to be effective today. And then I felt like over time, him getting those carries of those same schemes, and seeing the defense and the timing of those runs created some of those explosive plays.”
Wisner is now up to 46 carries for 185 yards and a touchdown this season. He’s not quite on pace to match what he recorded last year, which was 226 carries for 1,064 yards and five touchdowns, but that’s not out the window just yet.
He’ll look to make a trend of these impressive performances as the Longhorns make their way through the season. Up next for Texas are the Kentucky Wildcats, who will host the Longhorns in Lexington at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday.
