AUSTIN — Sophomore running back Jerrick Gibson has decided to utilize a redshirt for the season, allowing him to transfer and maintain a year of eligibility at whatever program he decides to play for next.

Gibson was recruited out of IMG Academy in Florida and was part of the 2024 recruiting class. In that time, he was rated as a 4-star and ranked as high as the No. 2 running back in the class, according to ESPN.

In his one and a half seasons with the Longhorns, he’s only been able to contribute very minimally due to the deep depth of the running back room, which consists of Tre Wisner, CJ Baxter, Christian Clark and James Simon.

As a freshman last year, he was able to attain 78 carries for 377 yards and four touchdowns. His hopes of improving haven’t exactly reached expectations, though, as he’s only recorded 152 yards and a touchdown.

He was also only able to receive one carry against Oklahoma on Saturday, which resulted in a loss of three yards.

This move will allow him to redshirt for the year and maintain a year of eligibility for wherever he chooses to go next, as he’s already left the program, according to Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas, who first broke the news.

His high school recruitment ultimately led him to choose Texas, but Florida, Miami and Georgia were close behind. It will be interesting to see if he heads back home or goes elsewhere.
