Where Texas Ranks in ESPN’s Football Power Index After Red River Win

By Published On: October 15, 2025

AUSTIN — The Longhorns secured a much-needed win over the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, which also marked Texas’ first conference win of the season, along with its first win away from home this season.

After ranking No. 8 last week in ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), the win over the Sooners resulted in a one-spot bump up to No. 7 in the FPI rankings for Texas, which is also seeing its odds for future success rising.

According to ESPN’s analytics, Texas’ odds to win out have now almost doubled, as they went from 3.2% to 6.1%. It will be a tough feat for Texas, as it has yet to face No. 17 Vanderbilt, No. 9 Georgia and No. 4 Texas A&M.

However, Texas does have almost a 100% chance to win six games. It’s practically guaranteed, but the Longhorns will have to ensure they put in the work to make sure that it happens, although the goal is geared more towards winning out.

The odds of winning the Southeastern Conference are basically the same as Texas’ odds to win out, as they sit at 6%. Right now, Texas will need to win out to even have a chance at making a SEC Championship Game appearance.

The Longhorns’ odds to make the playoffs did rise a fair amount, though, as they sat around 20% last week, and have now jumped up to 33.6%. As it stands, if Texas wins out and either doesn’t make or wins the conference championship, then it will be in a very good position to make the playoffs at the end of the season, due to the new expanded playoff rules.

If Texas were to make the playoffs, ESPN’s analytics give the Longhorns just a 5.7% chance to make the national championship game, and only a 2.9% chance to win the national title.

That’s still the long-term goal for Texas, but it will have to win out if it wants to see that sort of success. So, the Longhorns will need to focus on their short-term goals of winning each week’s game.

The short-term goal for Texas right now is beating the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, who are currently 2-3 with no wins in conference play, and also rank No. 50 in the Football Power Index.
