Quick Thoughts After Texas’ 16-13 Overtime Victory Over Kentucky

By Published On: October 19, 2025

AUSTIN — Texas put on an abysmal showing against the Wildcats on Saturday as offensive struggles were prevalent throughout the entire game, frequently holding the Longhorns back and ultimately leading to overtime.

After the poor performance, here are some quick thoughts about the Longhorns’ win:

– The defense was the only good thing that we saw from Texas in Lexington, and it’s been the only good thing that we’ve seen from Texas for most of the season. It demonstrated a great ability to stop the Wildcats in short-yardage situations, such as fourth-and-1 and goal-line situations, even forcing five sacks, 11 tackles for a loss, an interception, and two forced fumbles.

– Although the defense still played great, the offense did not help the defense at all. The offense forced the defense to stay on the field for the majority of the game, as it struggled to stay on the field for more than three plays for many drives. Issues can be attributed to many different factors and players, but as a whole, the offense was lethargic and incapable.

– For yet another game, it seemed as if the run game was just completely abandoned. Only two running backs, Tre Wisner and Christian Clark, recorded 15 carries for just 50 yards. Again, there were issues all around, specifically with the offensive line, but there were plenty of issues with play calling in the run game, and the actual performance from the running backs.

– Arch Manning played terribly, and there’s no other way to put it. Manning seemed to be going back to his old ways, the way he started the season, by making obviously bad decisions and throwing blatantly inaccurate passes. He did his job when Texas won against Oklahoma, but that didn’t happen today. It leaves you wondering when a change might be needed.

– Steve Sarkisian is a great coach and a good play-caller, but a change might be needed soon. There have been too many questions and concerns surrounding the choice of plays in certain situations, specifically in the red zone and in short-yardage situations. It might be worth it for Sarkisian to either demote play-calling duties or hire a new offensive coordinator who can call plays.
