AUSTIN — After continuous offensive struggles this season, head coach Steve Sarkisian has taken the blame for poor play-calling and perhaps the worst offense in the Sarkisian era; however, he will not be giving up play-calling any time soon.

The Longhorns had a disappointing night on the offensive side of the ball on Saturday night against Kentucky, as the Texas offense was unable to put up 200 yards of total offense due to an inability to run and pass the ball efficiently.

There were some issues outside of Sarkisian’s control, like quarterback Arch Manning’s inconsistencies and the offensive line’s struggles to block effectively. Still, there were plenty of times in which the play-calling provided issues of its own.

Sarkisian took the blame for the issues in his Monday press conference.

“At the end of the day, offensively, I’ve got to do a better job,” Sarkisian said. “I’ve got to do a better job of putting all of our players in position to be successful, that’s blocking people, that’s throwing the ball to open people, that’s running routes precisely where they need to be. That’s on nobody but me. When you can look in the mirror first and say I’m responsible to try to get this fixed and get better at it. Very comfortable with that.”

In addition, he was asked about why he would be the one to keep calling plays.

“That’s why I got hired: I was a really good offensive coordinator,” Sarkisiain said. “I believe in what we’re able to do. Every year, we have to continually evolve. There’s years where we’re going to be better on offense than we are on defense. There’s going to be years we’re better on defense than we are on offense. It’s like, if I was the best outside sales guy and I had a startup company, surely I’m going to go to the sales meetings if I’m trying to sell something. If that’s one of your strengths, I’m always going to tap into the strengths that I have, and I think being a play-caller on offense is one of my strengths. Some may disagree. That’s okay.”

It’s no secret that many fans disagree with his decision to keep play-calling, considering how lethargic the offense has looked in many of the games this season. The hopes are that Sarkisian and the offense will be able to sort it all out relatively soon, though.

Texas still has a rough stretch ahead of it, which includes games at Mississippi State and No. 5 Georgia, and games at home against No. 10 Vanderbilt, Arkansas and No. 3 Texas A&M. So, Texas needs to get its issues sorted out quickly.

First up, though, are the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday. The game will kick off at 3:15 p.m. CT from Starkville, and fans can watch from home on SEC Network. Texas is currently favored by 6.5 points.
