Oklahoma’s John Mateer Likely to Play in Red River Rivalry

AUSTIN — Oklahoma’s Heisman hopeful quarterback John Mateer is looking likely to make the start for the Sooners against Texas in the Red River Rivalry on Saturday, according to Oklahoma’s availability report.
After suffering a hand injury a few weeks ago, Mateer underwent surgery quickly. At the time, it was unknown whether Mateer would be available to play in the rivalry game, as it was reported that the injury would require a few weeks’ recovery time.
The Sooners released their first player availability report on Wednesday and listed the quarterback as questionable. However, after the second release on Thursday, the Sooners listed Mateer as probable.
Through four games, Mateer has led the Sooners to notable wins over Michigan and Auburn while throwing for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns. He’s also managed to rush for 190 yards and five more touchdowns.
The injury he sustained was to his right throwing hand, so it will be interesting to see if he plays like he’s 100% on Saturday.
